An energy efficiency study was conducted on the Belma site. It resulted in adjustment of boiler burners and insulation to reduce fuel consumption and atmospheric pollution caused by gas emissions and combustion fumes.<\/p>\n

BELMA is the only cannery in Morocco to have an operational wastewater treatment plant. The company invested €800,000 and annual management (operation, maintenance, etc.) costs total €200,000 per year. BELMA is a pilot plant for the study of wastewater treatment under the USAID programme (US Agency for International Development) together with Ramsa, the drinking water supplier for Agadir.<\/p>\n

Belma is committed to running an environmentally responsible business and recycles its used edible oils for biofuel production. This is carried out by an external service provider with ISCC certification (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).
Similarly, the sludge from its wastewater treatment plant is used to produce biocompost.<\/p>\n

Under the auspices of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), and with the assistance of a Swiss centre of excellence, Belma was audited with the aim of reducing its water consumption and wastewater and salt water discharges.<\/p>\n
The project is now complete and a wastewater treatment plant has been operational since 2008.<\/p>\n

As part of COP22 held in Marrakech in November 2016, BELMA participated in a study run by the GIZ (German cooperation agency). The study is part of a global project developed by the erman Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development on “adaptation of the private sector to climate change”.
